Mr. Benjamin Beneteau, the founder of the shipyard in Croix-de-Vie in Vendée at the end of the 19th century, built sailing trawlers. He wanted to produce boats for artisanal fishing. Thus, he built the first sailing trawler and later, in 1912, the first motorized tuna boat. It was a great success. Around the 1930s, the son of Benjamin Bénéteau took over the torch of the company following the death of his parents. At the beginning, it was difficult for him to lead such an important buisiness, however, after a while, the orders came back and the confidence returned. The activity of the company fell further due to the Second World War. However, after this, the number of sailboats in the French fishing fleet dropped considerably. The group will again obtain the confidence of customers thanks to the innovation of André Bénéteau, the son of Benjamin Bénéteau. In the 1960s, the third generation of the Bénéteau family replaced wood with polyester resin in the construction of new ranges of boats (for the hull and the deck). Indeed, in the 1960s, shipbuilding experienced a revolution called "polyester". But the Bénéteau family is not yet interested in yachting. Instead, the shipyard imagines the construction of small plastic fishing boats. And it is an immediate success. And it will exceed the expectations of the shipyard, it will go well beyond the professionals. In fact, many individuals will be interested in these small sailing canoes. Small sailboats to sail along the coast and go fishing: Le Pêche-promenade. This is how halibut and other Ombrines are born. But the recovery will only last for a while. Indeed, artisanal fishing is no longer as successful in France. The fleets of tuna, sardine and other trawlers are replaced by factory boats. Orders are down again and the yard is encountering difficulties. But the family did not give up and adapted. In 1964, the children of André Bénéteau took over the group. In 1972 the group became financially serene again. Now is the time to invest. It is therefore the beginning of the units of industrial production. The yard is making a name for itself at boat shows. The new Evasion sailboat range offered by Bénéteau is proving to be commercially effective. The Évasion 22, 28, 32 and others are still highly sought after. These sailboats are all designed by André Bénéteau, son. 1976 saw the birth of the Beneteau First 30. This is pleasure sailing, faster sailboats. André Mauric will draw a successful Half Tonner: L'Impensable. The architect is also the father of the Super Harlequin and Super Challenger. The boat will be presented at the Paris show and the success is immediate. The first First, the First 30, was born. The boat becomes the official series for the Tour de France à la Voile and commercial success is there. The 1980s marked commercial and industrial success for Bénéteau. The First range will be a resounding success. After nearly a century of productivity, Bénéteau remained the world leader among sailboat builders by being listed on the stock exchange. With the Bénéteau Oceanis range, during this decade, the shipyard tackled the cruise sector. At launch, the yard is offering the Oceanis 430 and 350 designed by Philippe Briand. Then came the Oceanis 320 and 390. 1989 is another important date for the yard. This is the year of birth of the famous one-design regatta and offshore race: Le Bénéteau Figaro. Built by Bénéteau in France from 1989 to 2002, the Figaro 1 sailboat is a one-design regatta monohull. It is a fixed keel sailboat, and rigged as a fractional sloop. It has a measurement of 9.14m. This new one-design has now entered the history of ocean racing. During the 90s, many shipyards encountered difficulties, Edel, Mallard, Gib Sea or Dufour. Bénéteau develops its production of sailboats over 10 meters, at the expense of smaller, less profitable sailboats. Thus, the Oceanis range has become the leader in its segment of cruisers over 10 meters. At the end of the century, the company grew and bought CNB, Jeannot, Lagoon and Wauquiez. With the first modular houses, the group further expands its activity. The shipyard has developed strongly in the luxury sailboat segment, with the Bordeaux sailboats.
