The Dehler shipyard was born in the early 1960s. Willi Dehler, an electrical engineer, produced his first dinghies in a former dance hall. They are called Winnetou and are three meters tall. In 1965, the first keelboat, the Varianta, was built. It is suitable for river navigation. Eight years later, the Varianta 65 is the first best-selling polyester sailboat on the European market. Innovation is the key to the success of Dehler sailboats. Thus in 1976 the Sprinta 70 was the first sailboat with a self-tacking jib. The Optima 83 sailboat also dates from this period. But it was in the 1980s that the brand enjoyed real worldwide success with the Dehler 34, a race cruiser sold in thousands of copies. Since the 1990s, sailboats have been designed by renowned architects Judel/Vrolijk. This collaboration results in an elegant design combining dynamism and functionality. After the death of Willi Dehler in 1999, several owners succeeded each other at the head of the shipyard. But the quality of Dehler yachts remains, as evidenced by the awarding of the "Yacht of the Year in Europe" prize to Dehler 47 in 2004. Finally, in 2009 Dehler was taken over by the HanseYachts group and construction is now in Greifswald. Success continues for Dehler. Thus the Dehler 30 one design model wins the European Yacht of the Year 2020 award in addition to the British Yachtings Awards 2019 and Best Sail Boats 2021. Whether for regattas or yachting, Dehler sailboats occupy a leading position.
