Anti-Twist Luff Ropes

ANTI TORSION LUFF ROPE

Custom built Horizon Sails anti-torsion cable for top down furling and furling code sails. The anti-twist luff ropes are custom built to your length requirement. Anti-twist luff rope for flying sails furlers, Gennaker, Code 0 or Asymmetric Spinnaker. Our anti torsion ropes are custom luff lines specifically designed to be used for torque transmission without loss along the cable. Anti-torsion rope has a unique torsional stability that transmits the furling gear rotation direct to the head of the sail. The rope adopts a triple fibre composite constructed to resist torsional forces from furling gear. It has a twisted aramid yarn core that provides the resistance to twisting. Our hardware sewn termination offers compatibility with all majors furlers brands.

To find the right cable for your needs, you must select the appropriate length. For Gennaker, Code Zero, or Smart Code sails where the cable runs inside the luff, the cable length should match the available luff length of the sail. For asymmetric sails with top-down furling, the cable length should correspond to the available hoist length, regardless of the sail's luff length. For top-down furling, choose a cable with a larger diameter. For bottom-up furling, a smaller diameter option is sufficient. If you are buying a cable for an existing furler or sail, it is essential to check that the cable thimbles fit the jaw width and pin diameter of the furler drum and swivel.

Torsional cables operate differently depending on the application:
- For straight-luffed sails with bottom-up furling (Code Zero, Gennaker): Tensile loads are significantly higher. To minimize drag, cable diameters can be reduced. In this case, since the cable is contained in the luff, after 2 or 3 turns, the sail's leading edge contributes to creating the required torsion.
- For asymmetric sails with top-down furling: Cable diameters must be relatively larger compared to their length. These cables are only under load during furling and unfurling phases, with lower overall loads.

Furling Mechanisms
- Bottom-up furling: The tack of the sail is directly attached to the cable thimble. When the drum begins to rotate, the cable turns, and the sail wraps around the cable.
- Top-down furling: The luff of the sail is not attached to the cable. The tack of the sail is mounted on an independent swivel. When the drum begins to rotate, torque is transmitted along the cable's entire length to the top of the sail, where furling starts.

Important Note: Although a continuous line furler can operate in both directions, it is better to furl the sail in one direction only. Braided covers are symmetrically designed, but during the first uses, the fibers in the cover align with the torsional load direction. If you furl in both directions, the fibers will constantly shift, breaking down the resin that provides the cable's stiffness.
