Founded in 1964, in Dangé-Saint-Romain, near Poitiers in Vienne, France, the Archambault shipyard builds sailboats from 6 to 13 m. In 1976, Jean Archambault embarked on laminate construction. It was a success, since the “dayboat” the Surprise met with great success at the 1977 Boat Show. Its architect was Michel Joubert. The Surprise underwent various modifications thereafter but never changed hull. Its modernized cockpit is particularly comfortable. This boat is suitable for all kinds of regattas. The yard developed with the arrival of Jean's two sons, Emmanuel and Jean-Jacques, and built other famous sailboats: the Sprinto, the A 27, the Grand Surprise, the A 31, the M 34, the A 35 …. Prestigious trophies reward this work: the A 40 was elected sailboat of the year 2004, the A 35 sailboat of the year in 2007, by Voile Magazine. In 2008, 120 sailboats were produced by around sixty employees for a turnover exceeding 8 million euros. But in 2011/2012, the crisis in the nautical sector hit the shipyard hard and activity dropped significantly. In 2012, it is bankruptcy. Buyers follow one another to get this great name in shipbuilding back on its feet.
