All those who love sailing know the Belouga, these small molded wooden sailboats which had enormous success in the 1950s. They are the work of a large French shipyard: the Jouët shipyard. This marks the history of the construction of sailboats in France. First of all, its longevity is exceptional since the shipyard was born in Sartrouville in 1872. Then the company has greatly contributed to democratizing sailing pleasure. It all starts with a boat...laundry. Antoine Blondeau does it for his wife. This is how the shipyard was born and began the construction of boats for fishing and ballads on the Seine. In 1920, Paul Jouët joined forces with Antoine Blondeau. The "Sartrouville shipyard" was born, it will become "Paul Jouët & Compagnie". The naval architect Eugène Cornu joined the team in 1923. Dozens of boats and pleasure cruisers were designed by this great architect, including the famous dinghy Belouga (1943), the first habitable sailboat produced in series, and... the sailboat on which Jacques Brel learned to navigate. Unfortunately, the 1960s and the advent of polyester were critical times for construction sites and traditional wood constructions. The Jouët shipyard is bought by Dubijean Normandie and will become part of the Yachting France group. Jouët sailboats continued to be built until its cessation of activity in 1992.
